What Gluten-Free taught me about God

I’ve learned something simple but profound from my gluten-free journey. Since I can’t enjoy most cookies or cakes, when I do find something I can have, I tend to overindulge. It’s easy to go overboard snacking throughout the day. But when dinner comes around—the good, nourishing meal I actually planned for—I’m no longer hungry. I’m full, but not satisfied.

Isn’t that how it is with our spiritual appetite, too?

We fill ourselves with little things that feel good in the moment—scrolling, shopping, staying busy, entertainment. But these things can sedate our hunger for God. We may not even notice that our appetite for His presence has dulled.

The Bible says, “Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good; Blessed is the man who trusts in Him!” (Psalm 34:8, NKJV). But if we’re constantly snacking on earthly satisfaction, we risk missing the richness of God’s table.

Jesus reminds us, “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied” (Matthew 5:6, ESV). True satisfaction doesn’t come from what fills us temporarily, but from what nourishes our soul eternally.

I’ve started being more intentional, physically and spiritually — cutting out the extra “snacking” in life and waiting to be filled by something real. Just like with food, the more I feed on what’s good, the less I crave what’s not.

Let’s make room today to hunger again—for His presence, His truth, His love. Because when we truly taste and see, we discover that God is more than enough.
